Greetings,
Colleagues,
As many of you have seen, principals are sending an e-mail to their staff calling on them to support “interview and select.”  While the original e-mail was written by a member of Local 59 (a TOSA), the principals are promoting the message.

I have reminded the district that MFT Local 59 is, by law, the exclusive representative of the teachers and other professionals covered under the Minneapolis Teachers’ Contract.  State law and our contract require the School Board to “meet and negotiate in good faith with the exclusive representative of public employees in an appropriate unit regarding grievance procedures and the terms and conditions of employment.”
Principals and other “agents or representatives” of the School Board should not “meet and negotiate or meet and confer with any employee or group of employees who are in that unit except through the exclusive representative.”  In other words, they should not be promoting their views about teacher’s terms and conditions of employment to teachers in the workplace.

It is also a potential problem for Principals/administration to permit third parties to engage in similar actions in places and times that teachers are required to be as part of their work.  I have heard about a petition being passed around at a site council meeting and a school carnival.  The petition supporting interview and select was handed to all participants, including teachers.  Regardless of your view on the issues, teachers (staff) should not feel pressured, at work, to support a particular contract position.

If you experience this behavior at your school you should notify us at the union office.

Those of you looking for more opportunities to express your views on our contract and argue on behalf of your position are encouraged to communicate directly with your colleagues that represent you.

Below is a list of e-mails for the MFT officers and Executive Board members, and members of the MFT Negotiations Team. You are encourage to send us you views and concerns.  Later this week we will also post dates and times for individuals or groups to speak in person to the MFT Negotiations Team.

Thanks for being active in your union!
